Over 30 per cent push for end of GBV in Kenya - Change.org

An online petition launched by Kenyans online indicates more than 30 per cent of overall campaign were on topics related to Gender-based violence (GBV).

The research focused on petitions on topics of Education, Health, Gender Equality, Climate Change and Sanitation over the last 5 years.

GBV featured prominently throughout the 5 years and shot upwards significantly in 2022. 

Kenyans chose to talk more about femicide, women’s safety in public spaces, domestic violence, and menstrual health.

In a report released by Change.org, more than 66 per cent of the total public support was for GBV related petitions. 

Head of Change.org Foundation Preethi Herman said GBV continues to be alarmingly high around the world,  which is rather unacceptable for the time and age we are in now.

"Our research clearly shows that Kenyans are building a public movement to hold their government accountable to the commitment they made in 2021, to end Gender-based violence within 5 years, setting a precedent for the rest of the world on addressing GBV,” she said. 

Change.org country director Muthoni Maingi said Kenyans have always advocated against Gender Based Violence and continue to do so as it is  reflected on the platform.

"It is a core thematic area that Kenyans continue to engage with and that policy actors, the government and society needs to take seriously,” she said.
