Nairobi county will soon have a public safe house for survivors of gender-based violence.

Nairobi gender-based violence coordinator Roselyn Mukabana said the county government will unveil the 20-bed facility soon.

“In June, the Nairobi government signed an MoU with the National Government Affirmative Action Fund to construct a Sh88 million safe house for survivors in Karura ward, Westlands subcounty,” she said.

Nairobi will be the 14th county to have a safe house for survivors of gender-based violence.

The county has never had a safe house for survivors of gender-based violence, despite being among the counties with the highest prevalence rates.

Cases of sexual violence are high in informal settlements across Nairobi.

So far, non-governmental organisations have been running the available safe houses in the county.

“The second safe house will be unveiled in April 2023 and will be constructed in Mji Wa Huruma,” Mukabana said.

She said this will help restore the dignity of survivors of such heinous acts, in line with Governor Johnson Sakaja's vision for residents.

“We must embrace the victims of SGBV and ensure they are counselled and protected from the heinous acts," Mukabana said.
