As Kenya joins the world in celebrating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we also begin 16 days of activism.

November 25 to December 10, will be about raising awareness about ending violence against women.

Nairobi county gender-based violence coordinator Roselyn Mukabana says that Sexual Gender-based violence is the most common form of violence against women and even men.

Speaking to Radio Africa Group’s Charity Chigulu, she said the cases are more common in informal settlements like Embakasi, Dagoretti, and Ruaraka among others.

“Nairobi county continues to sensitise women and girls on the dangers of sexual violence as it prepares to mark the 16 days of activism,” she said.

She said the county has identified several public hospitals in the city to help address cases of sexual violence in the county.

“They include Mama Lucy Kibaki and Mbagathi hospitals, Dandora 2 Hospital, Kasarani and Mukuru health centres,” she said.

Others include the Eastleigh hospital which has partnered with the Medicins San Frontiers (Doctors without borders) to help in catering to survivors.

“These hospitals have integrated Gender Based Violence services, creating awareness to the community and health care workers about how to manage survivors, recovery and assist with filling complaints to the Police,” Mukabana said.

She said the government and non-governmental organisations will use the 16 days of activism as a clarion call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
