The Judicial Service Commission has appointed 70 Resident Magistrates following the completion of interviews and their evaluation.

In a statement on Tuesday, JSC said the magistrates have been appointed on merit based on their performance, gender and regional balance.

"The recruitment will aid in expediting hearing and determination of cases and reduction of backlog. This is in line with the Commission's commitment to enhance the administration of justice by strengthening the Judiciary's human resource capacity."

The CJ Martha Koome chaired commission said the evaluation of the interviewed magistrates was concluded on August 4.

Initially, JSC had advertised for only 60 vacancies on April 14, 2023, but ten more slots were added following the expansion of their jurisdiction and the death of some of the magistrates.

"Their jurisdiction has since been enhanced to hear employment and labour relations as well as environment and land cases. The number of Small Claims courts also continues to increase across the country," JSC said.

"Considering these developments and buttressed by the attrition of judicial officers in the intervening period, JSC approved ten extra appointments."
