Three suspected gangsters arrested in Machakos

Three suspected gangsters were on Wednesday arrested and a motor vehicle suspected to have been stolen recovered in Mlolongo, Machakos county.

The suspects aged 27, 26 and 30 were nabbed during a botched robbery incident within Mlolongo Township on Thursday.

A fourth suspect escaped on foot.

Police said the incident was reported to Mlolongo police station as robbery with violenc and recovery of suspected stolen vehicle incident at 9.06am.

Police said officers attached to the station while on patrol near Cooperative Bank within Mlolongo Township encounterd gang of four people attacking a lady and advanced towards them.

The thugs upon seeing the police ran in different directions with the officers in hot pursuit.

Three of the thugs ran and entered a get-away vehicle, a black Toyota Ractis but were blocked.

The gang, according to the police, fought and injured officers as they resisted arrest while trying to be subdued.

Two police officers got injured during the incident; one suffered a swollen right leg near the knee while the other suffered chest pains.

Police said the get-away vehicle's number plate had been altered using stickers.

The suspects were found in possession of assorted digit and letter stickers, a bunch of assorted keys, ten pieces of master keys with a grinding file, eight mobile phones of assorted models, three crow bars, a hook and machete.

Police said a33-year-old woman who was being attacked when the officers struck was robbed of an Oppo A20 mobile phone, Sh11,000, a wrist watch, a purse containing her national ID card and an ATM card.

Police said all the items were yet to be recovered.

She was beaten and injured on the face and hands, police said.

They said the suspects will be arraigned in Mavoko Law Courts on Friday.

The officers said they will be charged with robbery with violence, assaulting police officers, resisting arrest, preparation to comit a felony and being in possession of suspected stolen property.

The vehicle has been detained at Mlolongo police station as exhibit awaiting verification of details and ownership.

The OCS Mlolongo is leading the case.

In another incident within the same Athi River East subcounty, gangs broke into Katani Secondary School in Mavoko and stole an assortment of property valued at Sh117,000.

Police said the incident was reported at 8.48am on Thursday.

"It was reported by Principal Katani Secondary School that he had an incident of school breaking. Police responded to the scene and it was established that today May, 23, 2024, at about 2.30am, five robbers armed with crude weapons gained entry into school through the main gate and broke into bursary, Principal, Deputy principal, director of study, exams and secretary offices," a police officer privy to the incident told the Star on Thursday.

He said the assailants stole Sh49 000 in cash, a laptop of HP make valued at Sh35,000, a school mobile phone valued at Sh12,000 and assorted calculators valued at Sh27,000 from the bursar's officer.

Police said from the exams office, the thiefs stole a laptop of HP make valued at Sh35,000 while Sh8,000 in cash was taken from the secretary's office.

All the stolen items are valued at Sh117, 000.

Police said there was a night guard on duty during the incident.

"The watchman said he was at the side of dormitories during the incident," the officer said.

The scene was visited and processed and documented by scene of crime officers from SNP police station.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.

No arrests had been made by press time.
