Tanzania's former President Jakaya Kikwete has been unveiled as the East African Community's chief observer and head of mission in Kenya's August 9 General Election.

The announcement was made on Monday, just 8 days before the polls.

"The mission is comprised of about 50 observers from the EAC Partner States who will be in the country from August 1 to  August 12, 2022, to observe the elections," the statement reads.

The main cause as indicated in the report includes the assessment of the adherence to the democratic principles of the EAC as enshrined in the Treaty.

"Offer objective recommendations for continuous improvement for the conduct of such elections," the tweet reads.

They are also set to see the level of preparedness of the key electoral stakeholders for this election.

"Assess the level of compliance of the electoral processes & management to the international, regional and national established laws, principles and practices."

Other organizations such as the European Union Election Observation Mission camped in 39 out of the 47 counties to monitor the electoral process in April.

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) also deployed a high-level pre-election assessment mission in May 2022 as part of their joint efforts to promote free, fair, peaceful and credible elections in the country.

They assessed the state of preparedness for the 9 August 2022 General elections in the country.

The teams engaged in dialogues and consultations with stakeholders to ensure violence-free, fair and credible elections is delivered.

The joint AU-COMESA-EAC high-level mission assured the people of Kenya of their commitment to supporting the country’s efforts to entrench a culture of democracy and peace.
