Luhya elders have asked Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula to stop attacking President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying this might leave the country more divided.

The elders, led by Patrick Wangamati, told the Star the Bungoma senator is a good spokesperson but should weigh his words before addressing the President.

Patrick is the father of Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati.

He spoke to the Star at his Khachonge home on Tuesday.

“We know it’s his constitutional right to campaign and address the media, but he must not address the President like he is addressing a kid,” Wangamati said.

Earlier in the week, Wetang'ula had told Uhuru to stop making reckless and careless statements that might divide the country.

“I was shocked and embarrassed to see in the media that the President is alleging that his deputy attempted to impeach him. This is laughable and regrettable," the senator said.

“The President is the symbol of national unity and a ray of hope for the country. Making such reckless statements will leave the country more divided.”

Wetang’ula told Uhuru that saying Ruto wanted to impeach him will not sway voters.

“Mr President, don't cause disaffection, divisions and hatred in the country. Let Kenyans choose your successor,” he said.

Wetang'ula claimed Uhuru was flaming up the minds of Kenyans by churning out fiction that has no foundation.

He referred to Uhuru’s assertions as meaningless and hopeless innuendos that won’t be bought by Kenyans.

But Wangamati said Uhuru has every right to address Kenyans as the President.

He also said Ford Kenya and ANC leaders should have consulted the elders before joining Deputy President William Ruto's camp.

“We know that there is freedom of association but Wetang’ula and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi made the wrong choice. They should have consulted us. Ruto won’t lead this nation,” he said.

Patrick also said Wetang’ula has failed Bungoma.

“Truth be told, Wetang’ula has been in Parliament for over 30 years but there is nothing in Bungoma to smile about. Let him support Ruto in peace as we support Azimio la Umoja,” he said.

“I want to ask Western region to rally behind Raila’s bid."
