Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula has hit out at ODM leader Raila Odinga after the former PM promised to revive Mumias Sugar Company if elected president.

Wetang'ula said on Monday Raila was lying to Western Kenya voters and instead blamed the ODM leader for the woes bedevilling the sugar sector.

The Bungoma senator told Raila to stop campaigns of lies and tricks about the revival of stalled companies.

"I heard Raila say while campaigning in Western region that when he gets into office he will revive our sugar industry. Which hogwash is this? Stop lying during your campaigns. The majority of sugar industries have stalled," Wetang'ula said in Bungoma town.

While campaigning in Shinyalu in Kakamega county, Raila promised that if he wins in the August polls he will prioritise the revival of stalled sugar firms.

He said he will revive Mumias, Nzoia and Sony sugar companies to spur economic development in those regions.

"To my people, once I ascend to power in August, by September I would have revived the sugar industries that are on their deathbed, so sugar cane farmers can reap from their sweat," the ODM leader said.

But Wetang'ula said Raila is part of the problem in the sugar sector because his name was widely mentioned in the stalling of Mumias Sugar Company.

The Ford Kenya leader said Raila is "literally the co-president of Kenya today" and he should tell Kenyans what the government "he co-owns and co-runs" can do to deal with the problems facing the sugar sector.

"You stood up in Kakamega and held the hand of a person whom you said would revive Mumias Sugar Company but nothing so far. No amount of tricks and lies can make us trust your words," he said.

"We can't resolve the problems in the sugar sector by using the same tricks. You have been part of the problem that caused them."

Wetang'ula said Kenya Kwanza leaders have a blueprint mapping how the sugar industry will be revived if the alliance wins the presidency.

"We have a blueprint for the economic revival that we will roll out after taking over power on August 9. We need to tell our people the truth and not lie to get their votes," he said.
