An ECDE teacher was on Sunday evening crushed to death by a lorry at Pala market in Kanjira, Karachuonyo constituency.

Ida Odira died on the spot after a lorry that was distributing foodstuff in the market hit her before ramming into her cereal and charcoal business premises.

Odira, who teaches at a nearby primary school, was reportedly offloading two sacks of charcoal for sale from a boda boda.

Residents said the driver of the lorry left his turn-boy in the vehicle to go and collect receipts from shopkeepers he had supplied with the goods.

The turn-boy, who has no driving experience, allegedly tried to drive the vehicle, leading to the accident.

“The turn-boy ignited the lorry before losing control of it and hit the woman. The lorry also crashed on the wall of the woman's business premises,” a resident said.

Kanjira chief Eli Obuya said on Monday the lorry was stationary when the driver alighted to collect the receipts but the turnboy was inside the vehicle.

Obuya said Odira bled profusely as she sustained serious injuries and died before they could take her to hospital.

The administrator said they reported the matter to Kendu Bay police station for further investigations.

“Fortunately the boda boda man who was helping in offloading the charcoal from the motorbike did not die. He only sustained some injuries in his right leg,” Odira said.

Area police commander Lydia Parteiyie said they have launched a manhunt for the driver and turnboy who fled after the incident.

The lorry was towed to Kendu Bay police station for inspection.

“We’re asking residents with information of the whereabouts of the driver and his turnboy to report for investigations,” she said.
