Three people died at Arujo bridge in Homa Bay town after a matatu they were travelling in was involved in a road accident on Sunday.

The vehicle veered off the road and rolled as its driver was trying to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming matatu and trailer.

Residents who witnessed the accident along Homa Bay –Rongo road  said the matatu rolled down and hit a ridge, killing the three occupants.

It is reported that the matatu was trying to overtake the trailer as they were moving near the bridge. The driver then lost control and veered off the road to avoid an oncoming vehicle from Homa Bay town.

“Three people died after their matatu lost control and rolled down in a trench. The other matatu also hit rail guard and caused injuries to passengers,” a resident said.

Speaking after visiting the scene, Arujo sublocation assistant chief Jackton Olielo said some three people who were injured in the accident were taken to Kisumu for specialised treatment.

He said at least 10 people suffered injuries from the accident.

“It’s unfortunate three people lost their lives in the accident but we’re doing more investigations into the cause. Drivers should avoid speeding to curb accidents on the road,” Olielo said.

The administrator said they are working with police in Homa Bay for speedy investigations.

“Two people died on the spot as the other died while being taken to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital,” he added.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Ole-Kiine asked drivers to comply with traffic rules to avoid accidents.

“The vehicles have been towed to Homa Bay police station for inspections,” he said.
