2,696 people have died in road accidents since January - NTSA

Pedestrians account for the highest deaths at 957 followed by motorcyclists at 741 - NTSA

There has been a 8.3 per cent increase in the number of fatalities from road accidents since beginning of the year to July compared to a similar period last year.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicates that 2,696 people have died over that period this year compared to 2,490 over similar period in 2021.

Pedestrians still account for the highest casualties at 957 followed by motorcyclists at 741.

The pedestrian victims represent a 12.7 per cent increase from last year's 849 while 6.1 per cent (741) more motorcyclists have died this year as at July compared to 698 last year.

According to the statistics, passengers recorded the highest jump in fatalities of 18 per cent from 399 recorded last year to 471 listed this year.

Fatalities in pillion passengers recorded the least increase (2.94%) from 238 recorded last year to 245 recorded this year as at July.

However, there was a decline in number of drivers and pedal cyclists who perished in road crashes this year compared to last year.

The data shows that while 54 pedal cyclists died last year as at July, the number dropped to 35 this year representing and 35 per cent drop.

In drivers, the number who died dropped by 1.9 per cent from 252 to 247.

The data was released on a day the country was mourning the death of at 34 people who died in a bus accident in Tharaka Nithi Sunday evening.

The accident occurred after a bus travelling from Meru to Mombasa plunged into River Nithi.
