Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has urged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate corrupt dealing in the county that occurred during the previous regime.

She alleged there was illegal hiring of workers in the Revenue board, Meru Water and Sewerage Services and alcoholic board.

“For instance, in one day 45 people were employed as permanent and pensionable in the Meru Water and Sewerage Services and 10 in the alcoholic board in the campaign period and their letters backdated,” she said.

At the revenue board offices, computers that had details of funds collected were nowhere to be found.

“When we inquired I was told heavy rainfall caused flooding in the offices and all the computer were damaged.  I have since told the new staff I appointed to report the case to criminal investigation department and EACC,” Mwangaza said.

She said she will not relent until she weeds out ghost workers and those employed without due procedure.

Mwangaza also said a new Lancruiser belonging to the county that went missing, has not been found.

“So many former county employees went away with property belonging to the county and we had to involve police to recover some of them while we are yet to recover others,” Mwangaza said.

She urged those who still have county property to return them, adding that she will do all what is necessary to recover them.

The governor urged EACC and criminal investigation to probe the alleged sabotage as funds belonging to the public might also have been used in the campaign.

She said Meru has about Sh1 billion pending bills most of which are owed to contractors.

The county boss said she will have to investigate before making payments to anyone.

“It is laughable that I found one contractor is owed Sh6 million  for doing various roads in Meru county. There were no names of these roads it was just written various roads in the county,” she said.

Mwangaza spoke on Friday at governor’s residence where she nominated 10 to the county executive committee. They include Gikunda Mungania (Health) Kiambi Atheru (Water), Karimi Njeru (Trade), Mocica Kathiori (Finance), Casty Micheni (Youth), Dickson Munene (Legal), Joseph Ithana (Education), James Murungi (Roads) and Japheth Ndumba (Lands).

She also nominated Thuranira Athiri as legal advisor, Dennis Mugambi as medical advisor to the governor and retained rufus Miriti as County Secretary.

She also nominated her husband Murega Baicu as patron of the Meru Youth service and Meru hustler’s ambassador to the governor.
