The Rotary Club of Malindi organised a 5km walk to raise awareness on polio in the region.

The club is also looking for funds to help poor and vulnerable people within the locality.

The event was held in memory of Malindi Rotarian and philanthropist Dhaji Bai Naran who died early this year.

Dhanji, who owned a famous furniture workshop and showroom in Malindi town, had contributed a lot to humanity.

The Rotarian who died on March 2 made great contributions to the development of Malindi town through his works of charity and environmental conservation.

He was among the founders of the Rotary Club of Malindi, which offers humanitarian assistance to vulnerable members of the community and institutions.

Eric Mwashigadi, the president of the Rotary Club of Malindi, said their aim was to raise around Sh2 million to help vulnerable children in the area.

Already Crown Paints Kenya Limited Donated Sh100,000 for the charity and handed the cheque at the start of the walk.

Speaking at the Buntuani Waterfront, Mwashigadi said they organised the charity walk in memory of Dhanji because he was very concerned about raising funds for polio.

"So today we are meeting here we want to raise funds for polio and part of the money will go to schools where we sponsor children who are really in need of school fees," he said.

Mwashigadi said they used to do the charity walk every year but stopped during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said now they have resumed the charity walk and next year the event will be bigger than this year.

"We are intending if possible to raise around Sh1 million or Sh. 2 million, but it depends on our sponsors who have been very kind to us," he said.

The president said they have taken polio as something very serious, adding that Rotarians buy vaccines every year.

He urged all residents and well-wishers to join the charity walk next year so as to raise more funds and help more people.

Nurdin Raghib, a prominent Malindi businessman and Rotarian, said they were grateful for all who took part in the walk as it was a great boost to the club.

"It will help the children from the less fortunate villages who can't afford school fees. Rotary Club supports their education through bursary," he said.

Member Mustafa Kasim Ali also thanked all those who participated in the charity event, which will help the less fortunate children pay the fees.

"We have been doing this for quite a few years but for the last three years because of Covid we couldn't do it. Now that we have started again let's hope for the best," he said.
