Shabana open 7-point lead in NSL after win over Mombasa Elites

Shabana increased their points tally to 42 points at the top log.

Shabana drubbed Mombasa Elites 3-1 to restore a seven-point lead at the top of the National Super League.

 Vincent Nyabuto and Peter Ogechi in the 80th minute of the game scored for Shabana as both players increased their goal tally to eight in the league so far.

The game was rained off on Thursday at halftime, forcing them to play the remaining 45 minutes on Friday afternoon.

The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 at the time of the postponement. Isaac Otieno gave Shabana the lead while Sharif Amugombo equalised for Mombasa Elite before the game was rained off.

Shabana head coach Sammy Okoth said: “We have played well and we went all out in the 45 minutes of play. On Thursday, our visitors arrived late and the game was rained off.”

He added: “We have been struggling to get to 40 points and this is a morale booster for us as we push for promotion. We now turn our focus to our next game against Vihiga United.”

Mombasa Elites coach Patrick Nyale said: “It was a tough game having conceded immediately after the restart and that affected our momentum. We never recovered.”

“We play Gusii FC at home on Monday and I promise it will be a different ball game. We tend to play well at home and Gusii should brace up for a long day,” added Nyale.

Murang’a Seal have a chance to reduce Shabana’s lead when they play Kisumu All Stars on Sunday at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

In other fixtures scheduled for Sunday,   Naivas will host Coastal Heroes at Camp Toyoyo while Silibwet will entertain Darajani Gogo at Bomet Stadium in Bomet County.

Mara Sugar face Kibera Black Stars at Awendo Green Stadium in Migori as Kajiado welcome Mully Children’s Family at Ildamat Stadium in Kajiado. On Monday, SS Assad play Migori Youth at Shamu grounds in Ukunda, Kwale County.
