Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has convened a crisis meeting of Kiambu leaders to rescue embattled Governor Kimani Wamatangi whose impeachment is looming.

The meeting will be held at Gachagua's Karen residence on Wednesday morning. Thirteen MPs, the senator, Wamatangi and his deputy Rosemary Kirika are expected to attend.

On Sunday during a thanksgiving ceremony at AIPCA, Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa requested Gachagua to intervene before the wars get out of hand.

Karungo said a lot has been happening in Kiambu and a reconciliation meeting was needed for the good of the electorate, who are suffering.

Speaking to the Star on Tuesday, Senator Karungo confirmed that the DP has summoned the leaders in the county to seek solutions on numerous issues affecting the leadership of Kiambu.

He said the DP will thereafter hold a meeting with Kiambu MCAs.

Wamatangi has on several occasions been accused by some MPs and MCAs of being a lone ranger.

Karungo said the governor has failed to reconstitute his government almost one year after he assumed office.

The senator said Wamatangi has failed to submit the names of the chief officers to the assembly for approval and he has been illegally working with those from the previous administration.

He said the governor has also not filled the position of the county secretary, which has been derailing service delivery.

Karungo further accused Wamatangi of single-handedly sourcing for Mauritius Insurance firm (MUA), instead of retaining the National Hospital Insurance Fund.

“I would like to appreciate our brother Rigathi Gachagua for finding time to host us for a crisis meeting to avert the looming impeachment of Wamatangi. We want peace and service for the people of Kiambu,” he said.

In response, Wamatangi said there is no bad blood between elected leaders.

He said he has been working closely with leaders on national and county platforms to enhance services to the people of Kiambu.

“There is no problem between me and the elected leaders in Kiambu and we are working well to ensure proper service delivery,” Wamatangi said.

He further said there might be a few leaders who are not happy with his leadership but the majority of them are supporting his administration.

MPs Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri), Gabriel Kagombe (Gatundu South) and Githua Wamacukuru (Kabete) had earlier accused Wamatangi of inaction and inability to transform the county for the better.

Ng’ang’a on February 17, blamed Wamatangi for woes affecting Thika Level 5 Hospital.

On the other hand, Wamuchomba piled accusations against Wamatangi ranging from failure to establish key municipalities in the county to attract more development funding, abetting sale of alcohol by licensing more bars, to failing to provide firefighting equipment in her constituency.

Wamacukuru had described Wamatangi as a public relations governor who does little to transform the county.

Wamatangi would later hold a meeting with MPs and they ironed their differences and resolved to work together.

A month ago, Kiambu assembly minority leader and Ngenda MCA Joe Kigara told the Star that everything isn’t working well in the county.

He accused Wamatangi of intensifying the division between the executive and legislature noting the governor hasn't been consulting them in service delivery.

"Don’t be misled, the relationship between Wamatangi and MCA isn’t good, he is a lone ranger and a dictator who loves to bulldoze things to be done his way," he said.

Political analyst Albert Kasembeli said Wamatangi should work with all leaders for Kiambu to prosper.

“Wamatangi should learn from his predecessor Ferdinand Waititu's failures. He risks being impeached,” he said.
