A Nairobi court has detained for five days, a man suspected to have murdered his father in Kibera pending investigations.

Joseph Atero Nanzai was detained by Kibera magistrate Jaqueline Ojwang after corporal Peter Kariuki filed an affidavit in court.

The court heard that the suspect had on various occasions issued threats and vowed to kill his father Amos Nanzai Okaalo before his sudden death.

“The deceased is the father of the accused and they had been living together in their house in the Kibera slum," the officer told the court.

"He has on various occasions threatened to kill his father and the area chief and the Nyumba Kumi elders were forced to intervene."

He told the court that a report of the missing person was made at Langata police station under OB Number 22/02/02/2023,  however, two days later another OB number 4/02/022023 was made which indicated that the man has been killed.

The court heard that the man's body was discovered after a foul smell emanated from his house.

“There was a foul smell from the deceased house and upon opening the door he was found lifeless on his bed and blood oozing from his mouth, the deceased was neither weak nor sick before his death,” Kariuki told the court.

The detective urged the court to grant him more days to complete the investigations as other key suspects were yet to record their statements.

He also told the court that the accused needed to be taken for a mental assessment to ascertain if he was in a position to take a plea.

The magistrate directed the accused to be detained at the Langata police station.

The case will be mentioned on Tuesday for further directions.
