A man suspected to have hacked to death two of his neighbour's children has been killed by members of the public.

Forty-year-old Zakayo Ruth is said to have admitted to having hacked the two children aged four and 10.

He is said to have been in hiding since committing the alleged offence last Thursday.

Confirming the incident, Kiomo chief, Benedeta Wamuo said the man had pleaded with residents to direct him to the chief's homestead as he was starving.

The residents called the father of the children, who confirmed that he was the murder suspect.

"After confessing, members of the public killed him on the spot," the chief said.

Wamuo said the man said his initial plan was to hack the head of the family whom he said had been grazing in his land.

"According to the reports I got from residents, Zakayo said he was very bitter with the Maluki who was grazing his cattle on his farm. He wanted to kill him but when he went looking for him, he found his wife and children and descended on them," she said.

The wife is currently receiving treatment at Machakos Level 5 Hospital and is in ICU.

Muthui Maluki, the father of the children has called on leaders together with well-wishers to step in and help in the burial preparations as well as the accumulating hospital bill

"I am unemployed. I used to do menial jobs with my wife for survival," he said.

Maluki further said Zakayo was not a social man and was a loner.

The body was moved to the Mwingi Level 4 Hospital mortuary.
