Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has said the GMO debate should not be swallowed by politics.

Wamatangi said MPs should have a sober debate around the Generically Modified Organisms importation.

"MPs need to have a sober debate around this issue, the government has imported maize before," he said.

His statement comes after the MPs on Tuesday commenced a debate around the subject.

The import is meant to bridge the gap caused by reduced harvest amid the prolonged drought that has ravaged many counties.

This insufficiency pushed the cost of maize flour from Sh130 for two kgs a packet at the beginning of the year to an average of Sh200.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV the governor said impeaching Investment, Trade and Industry CS Moses Kuria following his remarks on GMOs was not the solution.

"Impeaching the CS for making that statement may not be a solution to what Kenyans are looking for at the moment," he said.

Wamatangi said that the actual position is, there is no standing recommendation to import the maize, and the rest of the discussion is hypothetical, adding that the proposal could be there.

"I don't think anyone has evidence that there are ships that are docking," the governor said.

Kuria had been in the spotlight after controversially admitting that GMO crops can also lead to death.

"Being in this country you are a candidate for death and because many things are competing for death in this country, there is nothing wrong with adding GMOs to that list," he said.

"That is why we have deliberately decided to allow GMOs in this country until we are satisfied that we have enough maize ."

His remarks came with a lot of criticism, with MPs threatening to impeach him.

ODM leader Raila Odinga also asked Kuria to apologise for his remarks.
