Yusuf Hassan, MP Kamkunji said Kenya does not have the required science and technology to produce Genetically Modified Organism seedlings.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Yusuf said the GMO issue has to be looked at from a serious perspective apart from the controversies of cancers and diseases.

"The biggest problem that GMO has is the seedlings that you will be buying are produced by three transnational companies," he said.

"In Kenya, we are not lucky to be the producers of those seeds which means if we introduce GMO for example maize, those seedlings with the crossbreed will interfere with the genetics factor of our food production."

He said if the genetics factor is interfered with, the traditional food chain and food systems will be destroyed and we'll be left from buying seeds from the monopolies as we cannot reproduce them.

The MP said there is no problem in discussing and introducing GMOs if one has the scientific facts.

"If you have done your scientific research and if you have debated and agreed that is the path to take, then it's good," he said.

Yusuf said the GMO issue is important and that it cannot be left to some few individuals or politicians.

"It's a matter that would have serious consequences to the 50 million Kenyans, it's not a political debate," he said.
