The Judicial Service Commission is set to interview seven shortlisted candidates for the position of Chief Registrar of the Judiciary to replace retired Anne Amadi.

The seven; Macharia Rose Wachuka, Ouma Jack Busalile Mwimali, Mokaya Frida Boyani, Wambeti Anne Ireri, Ndemo Paul Maina, Kendagor Caroline Jepyegen and Kandet Kennedy Lenkamai will face a panel of interviewees from JSC at diverse times from 8:00 am to 5:oo pm today.

The Chief Registrar is tasked with administering the judiciary fund and preparing reports and proposals on administration issues among other functions.

Once a candidate has been selected, the JSC is expected to communicate the appointment to the public.

Who are the interviewees and what are their qualifications?

1. Macharia Rose Wachuka

Rose Wachuka Macharia was admitted to the bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 2011.

She holds a Master of Public Policy from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Moi University. 

Macharia has served in senior government positions for the last 10 years, as an Associate Constitutional and Public Interest Litigation Counsel at the Firm of Waweru Gatonye Advocates, as a senior Foreign Service Adviser at the Ministry of Education and as Chief of Staff in the Ministries of Education and Sports, Culture and Heritage.

In 2021, she was appointed Chief of Staff to Chief Justice Martha Koome.

2. Ouma Jack Busalile Mwimali

Jack Busalile Mwimali is the current Editor and Chief Executive Officer National Council for LawReporting (Kenya Law).

His experience involves teaching at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the University of Nairobi.

Mwimali has amassed a wealth of education in law from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom where he got his PhD in Law.

This was after he got his Masters LL.M in Human Rights Law from Lund University in Sweden.

3. Mokaya Frida Boyani

Boyani is currently the Registrar of the Judicial Service Commission. She took up the position in 2011 in an acting capacity before she was officially instated in 2012.

She has previously served as a senior Principal Magistrate, Senior Resident Magistrate and District Magistrate, with experience spanning decades from 1997.

She serves as a member of; the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association(KMJA), the International Association of Women Judges, Kenya, Institute of Certified Public Secretaries(ICPSK) and the East African Magistrates and JudgesAssociation (EAMJA)

4. Wambeti Anne Ireri

Anne Ireri earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from Moi University and has a postgraduate diploma in Legal studies from the Kenya School of Law.

She is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and an Advocate of the High Court with more than nine years of post-admission experience.

She has consulted with the African Union and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Ghana on International Humanitarian Law.

Ireri currently serves as the executive director at the Federation of Women Lawyers-Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) and is currently the Chairperson of the Elections Observation Group(ELOG).

5. Ndemo Paul Maina

Paul Ndemo currently serves as the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, working as the principal assistant to the Chief Registrar.

He previously served as a prosecutor and similarly played a role in the formulation of policies and structures to support the newly established Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions under the Constitution.

Ndemo holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi, and a Master of International Studies degree from the same University.

He also holds a certificate in strategic and security Studies from the National Defence College, Nairobi. He was admitted to the Bar in 1998.

6. Kendagor Caroline Jepyegen

Caroline Kendagor Jepyegen is currently a Senior Principal Magistrate and the Acting Registrar of Mediation.

She has experience in the law profession for more than 15 years.

Jepyegen has served as a Resident Magistrate, District Magistrate and Deputy Registrar in her years of experience.

She also serves as a member of the Law Society of Kenya, the Federation of Women Lawyers - Kenya (FIDA) and the International Commission of Jurists.

7. Kandet Kennedy Lenkamai

Kandet Kennedy Lenkamai currently serves as the Registrar for the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Kenya.

He has served in the role since 2014 before serving as an Assistant Registrar in 2012.

He graduated in 2018 from the University of Nairobi with a Master's Degree in Law as his latest academic qualification.

He serves as a member of the Law Society of Kenya, the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA)and the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association (CMJA).
