Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu now says that President William Ruto cannot take Azimio leader Raila Odinga to the African Union Commission job alone.

While she commended the President for the move, Ngilu said that the Opposition also has many other people he works with.

"What has shocked me the past few days is the new handshake. Thank you for supporting Baba for the AU chair but you cannot take him alone. He has many other people with him," she said while addressing the Council of Governors Women caucus launch.

Ngilu noted that had it been a woman, the former Prime minister would not have gone to for the AU job alone.

She joked that she still needs to understand how male relations work in leadership.

"I still need to understand and I will study this a little bit to get how this works among male leadership. Women don't do that."

The former governor asked President Ruto to support women leaders in mobilising for resources to deliver on their visions for the people they represent.

Ngilu affirmed that regardless of the political sides they each support, the women leaders have agreed to work as a common unit for the development of the country.

"I want to ask this for the women. Please help these women to mobilise for resources."

She urged women leaders to not only focus on increasing the number of elected women governors to 16, but 47.

She insisted that with women as governors, the president will not have to worry about service delivery and he will have time to focus on other pressing matters.

"We are talking about increasing women to 16, why not 47? Women will help the president and you will be free," Ngilu said.

Ngilu was among three pioneer female governors in Kenya.

She was elected in 2017, beating incumbent Julius Malombe in the Kitui gubernatorial contest.

However, in 2022, she chose not to defend the seat for a second term but instead worked with the Azimio presidential campaign team.
