President William Ruto has said that the Nairobi Declaration will set the stage for a new approach to global climate action.

Speaking shortly before the declaration was adopted on Wednesday, Ruto said it also reaffirms the continent's determination to fight climate change.

"The Nairobi Declaration, our common stand and firm resolution, reaffirms our determination and sets the stage for a new phase in the global climate action and sustainable development agenda, giving the future of socio-economic transformation a distinct and affirmative African character," Ruto said.

He said from the collective action displayed at the summit, there will not be any doubt from any part of the world that Africa, is where the future of humankind lies.

The President said the participation of African countries has sent an emphatic signal throughout the world that a new Africa is here, and that it means business.

"I take none of these for granted, and I commend, honour and thank you for your tireless effort, steadfast support and willingness to go the extra mile for the sake of a brighter future for Africa and humanity," he said.

"Your participation in the Summit has further demonstrated your individual as well as our collective dedication to represent our peoples and champion their most important aspirations in every critical forum regionally, continentally and globally."

His remarks came ahead of the close of the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, which began on Monday.

The summit was attended by at least 17 heads of state.
