Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered for an increase of trains heading to Kisumu ahead of Christmas Day.

The move aims at reducing congestion on the roads.

“I have instructed Kenya Railways to increase the number of trains to Kisumu from December 21 to January 3, to meet the increasing demand occasioned by the festive season and ease pressure on our roads,” Murkomen said.

He spoke on Thursday after commissioning the Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes at the depot.

Murkomen was in the company of the Chinese ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian.

The CS said his ministry is committed to advancing rail transport for both goods and passengers.

He said the government will revamp both the Standard Gauge and Meter Gauge Railways, to increase their carrying capacity and distribution across the country.

“We are keen to enhance rail transport, which is fast, safe and cheaper for goods and people. We will also be working to restore passenger trains along the old MGR routes,” Murkomen said.

“We will also be increasing the number of wagons and coaches. The new and old wagons and coaches currently being revamped at our Nairobi workshops, will increase capacity for passenger transportation.”
