Mukuru kwa Reuben residents in Nairobi county have lamented over the ongoing demolition of houses built near riparian areas, saying they never received any eviction notice from the government.

The residents said they had lost property since the demolitions began on Friday, May 3

As seen by the Star, residents watched helplessly as the bulldozers brought down their houses.

The residents claimed that they were not given any notice to move their belongings before the demolitions began.

Wesley Onyaiti, a youth leader at Kingstone areas within Kwa Reuben said about a hundred thousand people live in the area and now they have nowhere to go as the demolitions have left them stranded.

"The rains have affected households which are now living in distress not knowing where to go, we have not seen any government action towards this situation," Onyaiti said.

Onyaiti further said that they didn't get any notice from the state ordering them to vacate.

He decried that some people have started evacuating while others are living on the roads.

"During the presidential campaigns they said that the government will prioritise bodaboda and the mama mboga in their development agenda but that is not the case now," Onyaiti said.

Jacqueline Nakhumicha, a mother of four alleged that the government directive to demolish houses built along riparian areas has already claimed three lives in the area.

"Our sisters have nowhere to sleep we are seeking the government, Kenyans to help us get a shelter since we are all stranded," she said.

Moraa, a mama mboga said all her belongings were destroyed leaving her with nothing.

"My house has been demolished. I don't even have clothes to wear, and I have nowhere to go," Moraa said.

Samson Chweya, the chairman of Nyayo Highrise ward Undugu Silanga said they have accommodated more than 1,000 displaced people at Joash Olum Highrise school.
