Quest for peace in DRC continues as negotiators meet in Nairobi

Efforts to restore peace in the Eastern part of the DRC enter a crucial stage today as parties involved in the mediation process meet for another round of dialogue.

East African Community is leading the process dubbed the Third inter-Congolese consultations of the Nairobi peace process.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is the EAC’s facilitator in the talks.

Burundian President Evariste Nyayishimiye who is also the chairperson of the EAC summit arrived in the country Sunday evening.

He will officiate the opening session.

“The observes will be the African Union, United Nations and invited members of the diplomatic corps in Kenya,” read a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Also expected to attend is the EAC secretary general Peter Mathuki.

The consultations are a follow-up to the inaugural peace Nairobi meeting held in April and the second one held at Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu in DRC.

The meeting culminated in the 22nd ordinary session of the EAC where Uhuru was picked to lead the process.

Today’s meeting comes following the official visit by Uhuru to Kinshasha and Goma DRC and a mini-summit on peace and security in the country that was held in Angola on November 23.

In a show of her commitment to ensuring peace in the Central African country, Kenya has already dispatched troops to the nation.

President William Ruto was in Congo last week where he held talks with President Felix Tshisekedi.

He is also expected to attend the meeting.
