A court battle is on the offing between Kirinyaga Independent governor candidate Wangui Ngirici and governor-elect Anne Waiguru.

This is after Ngirici pledged to counter Waiguru’s win in court.

Ngirici said the election process was characterised by massive rigging of which she has evidence.

She claimed that she has since carried out a forensic audit which reveals how the will of the people was subverted through election malpractices.

Ngirici said the rigging of her votes was done carelessly and will therefore use every possible legal system to fight for her victory

“We will pursue justice because I believe my victory was stolen. We have credible evidence because I believe we won fairly. Kirinyaga people came out in their numbers to vote for me and I will not allow their efforts to go in vain,” she said.

She cited discrepancies that were evident in the counting and tallying of votes in Gichugu, Kirinyaga Central and Ndia.

Speaking after worshipping at ACK Kerugoya on Sunday, the outgoing woman rep claimed that bribery dominated the exercise that compromised her victory.

Ngirici called on her supporters to remain calm as they intend to sort out the mess.

“The journey we started in restoring smiles to the people of Kirinyaga is not stopping anytime soon. We will not entertain a culture of greed and selfishness from some quarters and that is why we will do the needful,” she said.

Her running mate Eliud Wanjao echoed her sentiments saying they are optimistic that the court’s decision will favour them.

He said in some polling stations some votes were added in favour of their opponents, a situation he claimed was not in alignment with the voter turn-out.

On Thursday, Ngirici led her supporters in storming into the Gichugu and Kirinyaga Central tallying centres as they demanded for the re-tally of votes.

Waiguru who was vying under the UDA party was Friday declared as the duly elected governor after trouncing Ngirici with 113,088 votes against 105,677 votes.

This will not be the first court battle that Waiguru has been involved in.

In 2017, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua put a spirited effort to counter Waiguru’s win.

The Supreme Court however dismissed all elections litigation filed to counter her victory.

Eventually, a regional court ordered the awarding of  Karua Sh2.7 million as damages for infringing on her rights to a fair trial.
