Nominated senator Sylvia Kasanga has said that President Uhuru Kenyatta has every right to advise Kenyans on what direction to take.

Speaking on Citizen TV, the senator said Uhuru, like all leaders, he has the right to advise the people on his vision.

"But just to remind Kenyans that leadership is about influence and every leader has a right to bear influence on his people and advise them on what future vision he has. So the president has every right to advise Kenyans on how he feels the country should move," Kasanga said on Tuesday.

She insisted that based on the President's advice, Kenyans can make informed decisions on who to vote for.

Kasanga's remarks come in the midst of debate on whether President Kenyatta should keep off his succession politics.

The head of state has on various occasions made it public that he would prefer if his two-time challenger Raila Odinga succeeded him.

Uhuru's stand has not settled well with supporters of his deputy William Ruto who is vying for presidency on a United Democratic Alliance ticket.

Ruto and his allies have also asked the President to keep off politics and let them battle each other.

Raila is vying for presidency on the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance ticket.

Senator Kasanga however, noted that the President knows his deputy better than anybody else, having worked together for the last 10 years, as boss and his principal assistant.

She added that the president has very good reasons as to why he chose not to support DP Ruto.

"The fact remains that the president understands his deputy very well and for him to decide and tell Kenyans which direction to go, he has very good reasons."

Kasanga said that despite the differences between Uhuru and Ruto, the President has a duty to ensure there is a smooth transition and has to do everything within his power to make sure the electioneering period goes well.

The senator added that this is what is mandated to Uhuru by the constitution and he must act accordingly.

"It will form part of his legacy," she said.
