Detectives have unmasked a suspect who allegedly shot and killed a man and a woman at Adams market in Nairobi.

The suspect's face was captured on the CCTV footage as he terrorised the woman during a robbery incident on Saturday.

Police suspect the man is one of the thugs who have been targeting M-Pesa shops in Nairobi and its environs.

“The thug is part of a wider armed and dangerous gang that staged an attack at M-Pesa shops at Adams market. Two people were shot dead,” police said.

Those killed have been identified as Sophia Gathoni Maina, 53, and Paul Githinji Gitau, 50, although, they are not related.

Gathoni was shot at her shop while Githinji was hit outside as he responded to screams from the woman.

She succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, three days after the incident, while Githinji died on the spot.

In the CCTV footage, the man is seen attacking Gathoni who tried to defend herself.

The man then follows her to her shop in a confrontation before he opened fire

On the night of the incident, Gathoni was captured on the security camera preparing to close her M-Pesa shop at about 7 pm.

Then someone called saying he wanted to buy cigarettes from the shop but she directed him to another shop.

Police believe the man was part of the gang that attacked her.

An accomplice tried to force himself into the shop but Gathoni fought back and got out where the gunman shot her at least two times.

The three gangs ran out of the shop.

Gathoni was hit in the hand and chest.

Other neighbours rushed to the shop and helped the woman to the hospital as others sought help to stop the gang.

A witness said he realised Githinji had been hit in the head and helped rush him to Nairobi Women’s Hospital a few meters away where he was pronounced dead.

Gathoni's son Eric Kamau said his mother was hit three times.

A post-mortem conducted on Wednesday confirmed the bullets affected her lungs through the chest and exited the back.

Police took the bullets to the National Forensic Laboratory for ballistic examination.

The families of the victims have recorded a statement at Kilimani police station.

Police commander Muturi Mbogo said detectives are investigating the incident although no suspect has been arrested so far.

He said they are pursuing known suspects for now.

Mbogo said they are investigating to establish if the gang was behind some of the robberies reported in the city.

This comes as police said they recovered more stolen goods from the houses of some of the suspects who are in custody over the attack on a female motorist in Ongata Rongai.

The household electronic appliances that were stolen from the house at the weekend were recovered on Wednesday.

This is in addition to earlier recoveries made, including one pistol and items of clothes belonging to the robbers caught on CCTV.

Police said the items were recovered in Kawangware in an operation.

Four suspects are in custody in connection with the attack that has raised security concerns in the area.

However, a prime suspect believed to be the head of the gang behind the attack and others that have happened in the area is yet to be arrested.
