Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has disbanded the Wajir County Referral Hospital leadership and reconstituted it to enhance services.

According to a letter signed by the county health executive Habiba Maalim, Dr Dahir Somo will replace Dr Mohamed Bashir as the acting CEO.

Also appointed in acting capacities are Roble Hassan (hospital administration), Mohamed Hassan Maalim (Ag nurse manager] and Dr George Sibwoga (hospital pharmacist).

Others are Siyad Saney (Ag register clinical officer), Alex Mwirigi (lab manager), Dr Kawthar Shabbir Nurdin (medical officer in charge) and Rukia Dahir (hospital health records information officer).

The changes come barely a week after deputy governor Ahmed Muhumed made an impromptu tour of the facility where he hinted at changes.

Speaking at Wajir stadium during Mashujaa day celebrations, the governor said poor management at health facilities will not continue.

The health sector has been facing an acute shortage of medical supplies, scarcity of ambulances and lack of oxygen.

The Level 4 hospital has in the past year been making headlines for the wrong reasons with residents complaining of poor services.

This became a campaign tool for most governor aspirants who promised to improve the services once elected.

Accumulated debts owed to Kemsa forced the company to discontinue supplies.

This move affected healthcare services.

“You gave me the mandate to restore hope and achieve the development goals and targets we set for ourselves. This requires our bold actions for a prosperous Wajir,” Abdullahi said.

“As we promised during campaigns, providing quality healthcare services is one of our priorities. We believe you deserve quality, reliable, and efficient healthcare services, in line with our pledge to restore hope in our medical sector through wide-scale reforms.”

Abdullahi said healthcare remains the most vital devolved function and that is why his government is determined to fix the ailing sector by reviving all the non-functional health facilities.
