Education stakeholders and women leaders in Kilifi county have lauded Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire for being at the forefront in the fight against teenage pregnancy.

They said the legislator's initiative in building girls' secondary schools in remote villages will reduce the distance girls travel in seeking education.

So far the legislator promised to build five girls' and five boys' schools in the constituency by December.

Speaking in Mdangarani during the groundbreaking ceremony of Kauma Girls Secondary School, Woman Rep Gertrude Mbeyu said the projects will help address the teenage pregnancy menace.

"There will be no reason for a girl not to go to school with such projects and that means there will also be no cases of teenage pregnancy, may God bless the school," she said.

Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation chairperson in Kilifi county Witness Tsuma said they have been crying for a long time due to the increased cases of teenage pregnancies but Mwambire has addressed the problem.

"We will also make sure that even the teenage mothers who gave birth will get a chance to be in school," she said.

Mwambire said statistics have revealed that girls are lagging behind in education in Kauma due to lack of girls' schools.

Kauma subcounty director of Education Haro Mwatsuma said the project will help girls not only from Kauma but even from other subcounties.

"This area has not had a girls school and the girls in mixed day schools walk for long distances, for example, girls from Mdangarani walk up to Mayowe area or go as far as Palakumi in search of education," he said.

Deputy county commissioner Kigen Kefa said women and girls are the majority in Kauma and if they get proper education the area will be transformed.
