Starlets to face Botswana in second round of Cup of Nations qualifiers

The starlets beat Cameroon 4-3 on penalties in the first round.

Harambee Starlets will take on Botswana in the second round of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers in November after beating Cameroon 4-3 on penalties on Tuesday at the Nyayo Stadium.

The Starlets won the reverse fixture 1-0 courtesy of Cynthia Shilwatso's 75th-minute well-taken strike to take the tie to penalties where the  Beldine Odemba-coached side prevailed.

It was painful for the Indomitable Lionesses who, after being dumped out by Kenya, won't play in the finals for the first time since 1991.

Botswana beat Gabon 10-1 on aggregate to set a date with the Starlets in what will be a mouth-watering encounter.

After a 4-1 win in Franceville, the Zebras cruised to a 6-0 victory in the second leg.

Despite beating Tanzania 2-0 in the first leg, Cote d'Ivoire won't be part of next year's finals after losing to Tanzania in the penalty shootout. This was after Tanzania managed to win at home by the same margin, setting the stage for the shootout. The East African nation won 4-2.

Highflying Tunisia, commonly known as The Eaglets of Carthage, annihilated Niger 12-1 on aggregate and is one of the teams tipped to make it to Morocco 2024.

Burundi knocked out Ethiopia 5-3 in post-match penalties to sail to the next round. They however face a herculean task having been drawn with Algeria in the second round.

Burkina Faso beat Eswatini 3-0 while Egypt rounded off South Sudan 4-0. Algeria dumped out Uganda.

Ghana thrashed Rwanda 12-0 on aggregate to progress as Guinea made light work of Mauritius in their 11-0 demolition of the minnows.

Togo, Congo, and Namibia also progressed after wins against Djibouti, Guinea Bissau, and the Gambia respectively.
