Harambee Stars' head coach Engin Firat expects the team's performance to meet expectations due to the government's visible support.

Firat spoke on Thursday at Nyayo Stadium after Sports Cabinet Secretary,  Ababu Namwamba, presented the national team with an Sh10.7m cheque to support their trip to Mauritius.

Harambee Stars will use the stage to sharpen their talons for upcoming Caf and Fifa assignments that begin in November.

"It's not only what we have as players. If you don't have any support, it is impossible to do anything. Everybody understands that if you want good results, you also need good conditions around you. You can't succeed in situations, where you are unable to plan for the next day," Firat said.

"It's psychologically very important for us to feel the support coming from the government. It will solve a lot of problems we have in the organisation of the team," he added.

Firat said the government had intervened at an appropriate time. They had no clue how they would chart the way forward. "The support comes at a time we didn't know how we would handle the camp and our travel to Mauritius."

The Turkish gaffer said he had deliberately allowed a set of new players to prove their mettle on the international stage in the absence of luminaries who will sit out owing to a wide array of reasons.

"We will be a lot of players due to injuries or because some of them will have league engagements in June. So it doesn't make any sense to invite them over.

"It therefore means that new players will get a chance and they have to be ready for the task ahead. That's why we invited a big number of new players who now have a good chance to prove themselves.

"He, however, challenged the Football Kenya Federation to establish appropriate structures to tap into the wide pool of local talent to get the right personnel to steer the country to the desired heights.

"In Kenyan football, I don't know the potential and I believe no one else knows the potential of the country to produce good players. That's because there are no proper scouting procedures in the country. "We must have a systematic way of identifying and nurturing talent."

While presenting the cheque, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba said the government would continue to support the national team.

“We want to make sure we offer the support necessary for you to perform well in international assignments. The federation has given us a program of the preparations and we want you to be as ready as possible when the qualifiers start,” Namwamba said

“I wish you all the best. I know you are preparing to leave for Mauritius as part of your preparations. I will be cheering you from Nairobi, so please win your games,” he added.

Stars leave for Mauritius on June 10 for a four-nation tournament that features the hosts, Pakistan and Djibouti. The tournament will run from June 11-18 with all matches staged at the Anjalay Cooper Stadium.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa welcomed the government's support, saying it attested to a growing desire to transform the local football landscape.
