Taveta sub-county proved to be a football powerhouse in Taita Taveta county after it produced three teams that will play in the semi-finals of the ongoing Kenya Ports Authority-sponsored Taita Taveta County Football Association Super League.

Kimala FC, Chala Youngsters and Milan Youth proved too hot to handle, as they qualified for the semis following great displays at the Moi Stadium and Police grounds in Voi.

Kimala FC topped Pool B with seven points despite a slow start that saw them drawing 1-1 against Twin Brothers FC from Mwatate sub-county.

However, they picked up, beating Chala Youngsters 1-0 in a pulsating derby, before taking all the three points against Voi Youth with a 2-1 win.

Chala Youngsters, top scorers with nine goals, came second in Pool A having edged Voi Youth 4-0 before pipping Twin Brothers 5-1.  They lost 1-0 to Kimala FC, one of the favourites for the title.

The youngsters’ prolific striker Mathew Hatibu bagged the mini-league’s first hat-trick during their clash against Twin Brothers.

Milan Youth also topped Pool A with seven points, having sent an early warning to the rest of the teams by beating defending champions Gunners FC 2-1 before whitewashing Bughuta FC 3-1.

Exhaustion then creeped in and they settled for a barren draw with Burandogo FC, also from Taveta sub-county.

By the time of going to press, defending champions Gunners looked set to make the final semi-final slot leading Bughuta FC 3-0 in the 70th minute at the Police grounds.

On Saturday, Milan Youth will square it out with Chala Youngsters in another derby at Voi Stadium while Kimala FC will most likely face the Gunners who represent Voi sub-county.

The final, whose chief guest will be KPA’s Sudi Mwasinago, will also be played at the same venue on Saturday evening.

Chala coach Gideon Mutuku expressed confidence he is the one to fly the Taveta sub-county flag the highest by taking the title home.

"Our two wins were not flukes. We have trained hard and have been focusing in this particular title. My boys also have that fighting spirit that is usually seen in champions,” said a confident Mutuku.

The super league is in its second edition and has been wholly sponsored by KPA with 32 teams having featured since it was launched in September last year.

This season, the authority increased its sponsorship by Sh1.8 million to the tune of Sh10.2 million.
