Upper Hill School rugby will play against Strathmore University and Catholic University second-string teams in readiness for the County Games next month.

Head coach Eustace Sifuna, whose side finished as runners-up to Ofafa Jericho last year in the 15s category in Nairobi, believes his side can turn the tables on their rivals to qualify for the national championships in Machakos in April.

“Our preparation started in September last year and we want to test ourselves by playing teams in the Eric Shirley Shield. This will help us gauge ourselves as a team," added Sifuna.

Sifuna said two matches against the Leos and Monks Sifuna will toughen the side mentally and physically for what will be a grueling championship with only one slot available for grabs to Machakos.

“I believe the boys will emerge stronger from the two matches. We want to use the matches to make amends before the County Game," he added

He added one of the areas they are laying emphasis is on the forwards where skill will be key. “Last season, our forwards were not skilled enough especially in the final when we lost to Ofafa. However, the game has changed and we expect the forwards not only do their core roles but bring a bit of x-factor,” said Sifuna.

The 2018 and 2019 national champions have also planned a friendly against Brookeside International School as part of their preparations for the county games.

The coach said they have received support and encouragement from Kibra MP and former principal Peter Orero.

Sifuna expects a tough battle from the likes of holders Ofafa Jericho, Dagoretti, and a  resurgent Lenana and Nairobi School in the county games.

“It's going to be very close all the teams are well matched it boils down to who does the basics well and is mentally prepared," added Sifuna.
