Annual Amadi Open attracts top teams from across the country

Tournament director Caleb Olang'o said more than 70 teams including national and regional champions have confirmed participation

More than 70 teams have confirmed participation in the annual Amadi Open tournament this weekend at Maseno School.

The tournament director Caleb Olang’o said they expect more teams to confirm participation by Friday.

"This tournament has attracted national and East Africa champions. We also expect seasoned schools that have in the past won various titles. It is like a National Secondary Schools Games,” said Olang’o.

Olang’o, who is Maseno School’s sports director, said the tournament will feature basketball 5x5 and 3x3, hockey, rugby 15s and 7s, football, handball, volleyball, netball, table tennis, badminton, lawn tennis and chess (boys and girls).

The tournament is sponsored by Equity Bank, Maseno School, CIC Insurance and Ciala Resort.

In rugby 15's National secondary schools rugby champions Butula will lock horns with 7's champions Koyonzo, Nyanza champions Kisii School, former giants Kakamega High, St Mary’s Yala and St. Peter’s Mumias.

Others are Musingu, Vihiga High, Moi Forces Academy, St Anthony’s Kitale and Kabianga High among others.

Kisii School coach Lee Arstone said: “We want to go there and defend our title which we won last year. This will be a good platform to gauge the boys ahead of the season.”

In boys’ football, St Anthony’s Kitale are favourites to lift the title but will face opposition from rivals Goseta, Musingu, Agoro Sare, Ebwali, Kakamega High, Serani, St Mary’s Yala and Nyanza champions Agoro Sare.

Maseno University and Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology have also confirmed their participation in the annual tournament.
