Blazers still keen on title defence despite inconsistency

Despite being four points adrift of runaway leaders Strathmore Scorpions, Blazers captain Tracy Karanja said their focus still remains to retain the Kenya Hockey Union Premier League title.

Blazers drew 1-1 with Lakers on Sunday, their second stalemate of the season. The record champions lost 2-0 to Scorpions earlier in the season to highlight their inconsistency.

Lakers climbed to third with eight points after thumping Sliders 4-0 on Saturday. USIU-A Spartans dropped to fourth with seven points and are yet to play a match after the league resumed last month. Wolverines, Sliders and Sailors are fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

In the men's cadre, Butali Warriors (30 points), maintained top spot despite a 1-1 draw with Western Jaguars. The sugar millers have opened a six-point gap over second-placed Kenya Police.  The law enforcers have picked up two draws in as many matches.

Red-hot Jaguars are third on 17 points. Sailors, Wazalendo and Greensharks all have 16 points to rank fourth, fifth and sixth in that order on the strength of goal difference.

Mombasa Sports Club are bottom with four points and relegation looks inevitable for the league returnees. 

In the men's Super League, former national champions Sikh Union are primed for promotion after taking charge of proceedings with 41 points from 16 matches. KCA University are second with 28 although they have played four games less than the leaders.   

Kenya University, the other unbeaten team along with Butali, lead the women's Super League with 22 points from eight matches.
