Kenyan horse racing has come a long way since the starting of the Somali Ponies in the then administrative capital, Machakos in 1905.

The 110th anniversary of horse racing in Kenya was celebrated in style at the Ngong Racecourse grounds in Nairobi on Sunday afternoon.

Private maritime security contractor Salama Fikira sponsored the event for the third consecutive year alongside others including the Star Newspaper.

There were nine races on the cards with Knighthood ridden by Richard Kibet winning the 1,000 metres long Salama Fikira Breeding Futurity Stakes.

Another big winner on the day was Red Raider ridden by South African jockey Robert Kathi and trained by Joe Karari.

Away from the track, race fans were treated to entertainment from the Sarakasi dancers and live music from the Mojo band.

In attendance were Salama Fikira director of maritime and offshore Carlos Edwards, Radio Africa internal auditor John Gakunyi and the Star circulation manager Eric Mwangi.
