ODM leader Raila Odinga has promised to turn around the country’s economy on the third day of his vote-hunting mission in Western Kenya.

Kakamega county on Sunday described the August 9 polls as critical in fixing the country’s economy and empowering Kenyans to live a descent.

Addressing rallies in Shinyalu, Khayega, Musoli and Navakholo, the former Prime Minister said he has the solution to the economic challenges the country is facing.

He said Kenyans will feel a turnaround in the economy within his 100 days after taking over office.

“The first liberation ended the colonial leadership and gave us independence in 1963. After that we had the dictatorship leadership which was brought to an end then when we brought the new Constitution, and that being the second liberation,” he said.

Raila said his plan to roll out his Sh6,000 social protection programme targeting all poor households with no reliable income is in place.

"I was Prime minister in this country and I know where the money to do all these things will come from," he said

The Azimio La Umoja coalition presidential flag bearer Raila also called on the country to exercise unity, peace and harmony during this period of campaigns and even after.

He said the church has an important role to play in ensuring peaceful election.

“During the struggle for independence the church played a very vital role. It stood up as a voice of reason in support for the struggle for change in our country," the ODM leader said.

"I remember people like Bishop Alexander Muge, Bishop Ndingi Mwana Anzeki, Rev [Timothy] Njoya, among many other religious leaders who played a very important role in liberating this country.

“This is the message we are bringing through Azimio la Umoja that how good and pleasant it is for brothers to live together in peace and harmony. We want people to live together in peace.”

Under his government, the ODM boss said, youths will get business loans which will be paid after seven years.

He also promised to revamp the ailing Mumias Sugar Company one month after being elected president.

He said the solution to Kenya’s medical access challenges lies in his proposed Baba Care which will guarantee free medical care to all.

“We are saying accessibility, availability and affordability.”

He was accompanied by former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, Governors Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), James Ongwae (Kisii), MPs Junet Mohamed (Suna East), Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo) and Ayub Savula (Lugari).

Others include Gladys Wanga (Homabay MP), Tindi Mwale (Butere), Titus Khamala (Lurambi) and Caleb Amisi (Saboti).
