Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago's administration has pledged to clear more than Sh700 million pending bills before the general election in August.

Mandago is completing his second term and will be vying for the Senate on August 9 polls.

His deputy, Daniel Chemno, said Mandago's administration is committed to ensuring they leave a clean plate for the incoming governor.

"We have a few pending debts but we will ensure that we pay all of them by August," Chemo said.

He said delayed disbursement of resources from the National Treasury to counties remained a major setback to service delivery in devolved governments.

"The delays have also been affecting our commitments with suppliers and service delivery firms because counties cannot pay within agreed time," Chemno said.

He spoke during a courtesy call at his office by a delegation from the Kenya Power Company.

The deputy governor said Uasin Gishu, like other counties, had suffered setbacks as a result of delays in finances from the central government, undermining most operations including project implementation.

"As counties, even our projects have been delayed because contractors cannot deliver on time without being paid," Chemno said.

Mandago has been working round the clock to compete his mega projects before the expiry of his tenure.

The delayed projects include the Sh1.2 billion Ziwa Level 5 Hospital and 64 stadium projects, among others.

Most of the projects are in their final stages but may not be completed ahead of the elections.

The race to succeed Mandago will be a two-horse affair between UDA nominee Jonathan Bii and independent candidate Bundotich Kiprop Buzeki.

Buzeki narrowly lost to Mandago in the last elections and is expected to give Bii a run for his money in the county that is a UDA stronghold and home to DP William Ruto.

Bii will have backing from the DP and the party but Buzeki is known to be a tough campaigner with huge resources and influential rhetorical skills.

Buzeki has already set the ground for his campaigns after he hosted several meetings last week where he dismissed UDA economic policies as unworkable.

Uasin Gishu has more than 459,000 registered voters with almost a third of them from the non Kalenjin communities.

During his tenure Mandago invested heavily in infrastructure, water, healthcare and agriculture sectors where many other projects have been completed.
