New Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome has warned criminals that their days are numbers as he begun work as the highest ranking officer of the Kenya Police Service.

He said criminals will no longer intimidate or disrupt the lives of Kenyans as they go about their businesses.

“I am telling criminals out there, who think they can still threaten Kenyans, that it will not happen,” Koome said.

“I want to tell criminals who will be walking around with knives or guns thinking they can intimidate Kenyans that it will not happen.”

The IG however reminded Kenyans that they have a responsibility to ensure their security and the nation's.

“We have police officers who are professionals, 98 per cent of them are good. Only about two per cent are bad. We are being assisted by Ipoa and other oversight bodies to manage the two per cent,” he said.

“We also have officers within the police itself to manage the two per cent.”

Koome was sworn into office on Friday in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

He takes over from deputy Inspector General Noor Gabow, who has been acting IG since August 2022.

This followed the retirement of Hillary Mutyambai, who left the service due to health reasons.
