ANC backs Raila's AU Commission Chairmanship bid

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has continued to gain support from various quarters in the country in his AU commission chairperson bid.

Amani National Congress (ANC) party said it fully backs the ongoing diplomatic endeavors spearheaded by President William Ruto to have the Eastern African region lead the commission.

In a statement, party leader Issa Timamy also applauded the ongoing efforts at the AU Summit led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

"The party expresses confidence in the timing and merits of Eastern Africa's bid for the AUC chairmanship and commends Mudavadi's steadfast leadership in championing the region's candidacy," Timamy said.

The party has also extended its full support to the endorsement of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo who has endorsed Raila for the seat.

According to Timamy, Raila is a highly qualified candidate for the crucial position.

"His extensive experience and dedication to the advancement of the African continent make him a highly qualified candidate for this important position," he stated.

The party has at the same time called upon other East African Community member states to join in supporting Raila's bid.

The statement has also been signed by Secretary General Omboko Milemba and National Chairman Kevin Lunani.

Raila has announced his candidature for the seat.

"Serving as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure gave me the advantage of learning about each African country. I believe by working together, we can emancipate Africa," he said.

Elections are scheduled for next year.

Lobbying for the coveted position of AU Commission (AUC) chairperson seat is set to take center stage during the ongoing head of state summit in Ethiopia.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Singoei, who is actively involved in the campaign engaged in strategic consultations with Elkanah Odembo on the sidelines of the meeting.

Odemba, the former Ambassador to the US and France, is one of Raila's trusted lieutenants and is leading the team.
