Police have arrested the driver of a probox found carrying excess passengers along Kitale - Kapenguria Road.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, the vehicle was impounded for carrying 13 students.

In the pictures shared by NTSA, the students were seen bundled in the car.

Others were seen seated in the vehicle's boot to a point where it could not close.

Those seated at the front carried each other.

NTSA said the driver was arrested and will be charged in court.

The Authority called on motorists to be cautious when handling school children.

"Pamoja tuhakikishe watoto wetu wamefike shuleni salama," NTSA said.

This comes at a time when NTSA has launched road safety compliance checks on highways across the country.

The move is aimed at enhancing safety on the roads as learners started reporting to schools on Monday.

Police and the road safety authority impounded several vehicles on various routes in the crackdown aimed at ensuring the full compliance of road safety measures.

Random drunk driving tests were also conducted as part of the checks.

NTSA emphasised the need to maintain speed limits, lane discipline and avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Among the major highways where the agency has mounted checks are Mombasa-Nairobi, Narok-Nairobi, Sotik-Kisii, Kimilil-Chwele and Kisii-Migori.

The operation started on Friday and is set to continue throughout next week.

Traffic police and officers from the authority are jointly conducting the operation.
