A suspect was Monday saved by police from a mob that wanted to lynch him over claims he killed his wife in a domestic fight in Nyakach, Kisumu County.

Police were called to save the man from the mob who wanted to lynch him in Oboch location, police said.

Witnesses had reported that the suspect hastily fled the murder scene after allegedly covering his wife's body with a mat.

The victim, a secondary school teacher in Kisumu, succumbed to injuries inflicted by a blunt object in the head, police said.

The motive for the murder remains unclear but police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

Police said the suspect is in hospital under supervision pending interrogation and possible prosecution.

The incident comes in the wake of increased cases of murder and targeting women.

They include one in which the body of a woman was found with a missing breast in Gatundu, the murder of university student Rita Waeni Muendo, socialite Starlet Wahu, the murder of Nelvine Museti in Langata and one where a woman was killed by her boyfriend at the weekend in Githurai 44, Nairobi.

There is a campaign to address the menace officials say amid concerns about the rising trend.

Police say investigations into the incidents are at various stages and suspects are facing charges in courts.
