Motorists urged to avoid Kewi area in South C as the roads are flooded

Several roads in the city have been rendered impassible following the heavy rainfall in Nairobi and its environs from Friday night to early Saturday.

Some city residents have been compelled to seek shelter elsewhere after Ngong River burst its banks early Saturday morning, flodding sevral houses in the area.

Langata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalango has urged South C residents and those visiting the ward to avoid certain areas. 

"If you are coming to South C kindly avoid the Kewi area, Masjid Noor, The Olesereni Tunnel and the Kongoni area,"he said in an X post. 

Jalango added that there is a team working towards ensuring the draining system is controlled to enable residents continue with their daily activities. 

"Our team is on the ground and we will be advising with further updates on the situation," he added. 

One X user by the name Yusuf posted a photo of the flooded Olesereni Tunel, saying Kenyans would need a boat to access the building. 

"You will definitely need a boat if you are planning to have lunch at Ole sereni hotel," Yusuf said. 

In Bomet county, at least two people have been reported dead in a quarry following heavy rainfall. They were part of the workers at the quarry. 

The Meterological Department in latest update has announced Kenyans will continue experiencing chilly weather in several parts of the country. 

In its latest weather forecast for next week, spanning January 14–20, 2023, the Met department has predicted that rainfall is expected over Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Highlands, which includes Nairobi, the Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coast region.

However, most parts of Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya are likely to be generally dry,the Met forecast shows.

"Rains are expected to occasionally spread into the counties of Isiolo and Samburu. The northern parts of Turkana may experience light rainfalls on Monday and Tuesday," Met said.

The seven-day forecast further shows that isolated storms are likely in parts of the highlands east of Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, South Rift Valley and Southeastern Lowlands.
