Kenya Red Cross sets up tracing desk after Kwale accident

Preliminary investigations indicate that driver of the trailer failed to maintain to his lane, forcing the bus to veer off the road

The Kenya Red Cross has set up a tracing and psychosocial support services desk at Samburu Subcounty Hospital after a grisly accident in Kwale on Sunday.

In a statement on Sunday, Red Cross said the aim of setting up the desk at the hospital is to provide crucial assistance and comfort to those affected.

The accident which occurred at Taru along Kwale-Mombasa Road involving a PSV bus and a trailer has left two people dead and 20 others hospitalized.

Those injured were rushed to Samburu Subcounty Hospital by the county Ambulance services and well-wishers.

“Recognizing the need for comprehensive support, the Kenya Red Cross Kwale is currently establishing a tracing and psychosocial support services desk at the hospital, aiming to provide crucial assistance and comfort to those affected,” it said.

Lydia Mambo, the area OCPD, verified the tragic occurrence, stating that the two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the immediate deaths of the two individuals.

"Two people have died and several others were rushed to hospital," she said.

The bus was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi and the trailer was going in the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

The National Police Service has appealing to motorists to adhere to traffic regulations during this festive season to prevent road crashes.

This comes barely two days after 47 people were injured following a road accident along the Londiani - Muhoroni Road, Kericho County. 

The accident occurred on Friday morning involving a 62-seater bus.

Kenya Red Cross said the 47 have been taken to Fort Tenan Sub County Hospital by the County Government and EMS Kenya.

Additionally, seven people escaped unharmed.
