President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome have won the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Persons of the Year 2023 Awards.

President Ruto jointly won the African of the Year award alongside Afreximbank President Prof. Benedict Okey Oramah

CJ Koome on her part jointly won the African Female Leader award.

The CJ won the award alongside Botswana's Lucara Diamond Managing Director Naseem Lahri.

The ALM Persons of the Year Awards are Africa's premier vote-based endorsements, annually reserved for leading Africans contributing to the continent's progress, positively altering its perceived negative image.

The 2-step selection process offers an opportunity for Africans from across the globe to be part of the process of celebrating leaders contributing to Africa's growth and development.

The winners and runners-up will be formally presented with instruments of honour during the flagship annual ALM Persons of the Year awards ceremony set to take place on February 22, 2024, at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Union headquarters.

Koome had been nominated by a cross-section of readers and followers who responded to a call for nominations, distributed by the African Leadership Magazine media partners across the continent.

The nomination of Koome was consistent with ALM’s tradition of presenting the sides of the continent’s leadership achievements, which hardly finds placement on global media platforms.

“The African Female Leader of the Year Award is reserved for an African woman who has defied the odds and risen above the patriarchal systems in the continent to positively affect the continent and influence women to aspire for excellence in various fields,” ALM said.

Koome was nominated alongside Vice President of Benin Mariam Chabi Talata, Executive Director, UNAIDS Winnie Byanyima, the Chairman, of Standard Bank Group, South Africa Nonkululeko Nyembezi, and Managing Director, Lucara Diamonds, Botswana Naseem Lahri.

ALM had invited people to visit the website to participate in the voting process.

Voting closed on December 14, 2023, at midnight (Central Africa Time).
