KNUT's Oyuu elected to international education body

He was elected representative of Executive Committee of Education International Africa Region.

Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Collins Oyuu has been elected the Representative of zone 5 to the Executive Committee of Education International African Region (EIRAF).

The SG battled it out to floor Filbert Bates Baguma who is the current Secretary General of Uganda National Teachers' Union (UNATU).

Oyuu was elected the representative of Executive Committee of Education on Wednesday.

The elections were held on the sidelines of the just concluded EIRAF conference at Johannesburg, South Africa.

The five-day conference started on Sunday, November 19 and ended on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

Oyuu now replaces Yohannes Benti who is the president of the Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA).

Benti will proceed to represent African Region globally at Education International.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers’ said it is committed to regaining its lost regional, continental and global glory through collaborations and unity talks with teacher unions and federations of the world.

"The KNUT leadership congratulates the Secretary General for this deserved win and wishes him strength and good health as he discharges his duties and responsibilities in this international position. Congratulations Bwana Katibu Mkuu," the Union said.

EIRAF is a global teacher and education workers labour federation with more than 32 million members.

The 10th EIRAF conference focused on crucial topics such as making Early Childhood Education for All a reality in Africa and creating safe and healthy schools and education institutions.

The discussions also addressed evidence-based social and policy dialogue, and defending and promoting academic freedom and professional autonomy in Africa.

The conference was held under the auspice of the South African Education International member organisations.
The theme of the conference was - Standing Together for Resilient Education Systems in Times of Crisis.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday delivered a key note speech during the conference.
