Mount Kenya, long known as a political powerhouse in Kenya, is currently experiencing a series of internal wrangles that undermine community unity.

These developments are taking shape as a new political friendship emerges, bridging the gap between President William Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi, Raila Odinga, and Kalonzo Musyoka.

The shifting alliances and allegiances within the region signal a profound change in its political landscape.

Political pundits aver that Mt Kenya appears to be experiencing an undercurrent political betrayal as DP Rigathi Gachagua is consistently calling for the region's unity.

Political analyst Albert Kasembeli suggested that the emerging friendship between Ruto, Musalia, Kalonzo and Raila may be a re-emergence of the political Pentagon similar to that of 2007.

Kasembeli noted that the evolving political landscape has prompted Gachagua to seek reconciliation with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, indicating a growing sense of urgency for a united front.

"There is a new alignment coming up similar to that of the Pentagon team and this might affect Gachagua's political bid and this can suggest why Gachagua is reaching out to former President Uhuru Kenyatta,” he said.

Gachagua had a few months ago claimed that Azimio leader Raila Odinga was bothering the President for a handshake, a move he said wouldn't be possible.

He said Ruto is an intelligent man who will not yield to such pressure to share his government.

"Our President is not a fool, he won't allow bringing on board the handshake people and destroying his government," Gachagua said.

In contrast, President Ruto, during a recent tour in the Ugenya subcounty, emphasised his government's readiness to work with everyone for the sake of development.

He vehemently rejected the notion that development should be linked to how regions voted, asserting that such sentiments were regressive and unjust.

"It is primitive and backward for anybody to imagine that any region of Kenya cannot get development on accounts of how they voted,” said Ruto.

National chairman of the Kikuyu Council of Elders Wachira Kiago on Wednesday endorsed the handshake between Uhuru and Gachagua noting that they should unite for the sake of the community.

Kiago noted that the Mt Kenya region should speak in one voice irrespective of political affiliation.

"Uhuru Kenyatta and Rigathi Gachagua should forgive each other and unite the community ahead of the 2027 general election,” he said.

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa recently said there is no division within Kenya Kwanza as well as in the Mt Kenya region.

"There is no division within the Mt Kenya region and what you hear is just a creation of the social media,” he said.

EALA MP Kanini Kega over the weekend at Ruiru Stadium pleaded with the people of Mt Kenya to support Gachagua and speak in one voice.

He was shouted down by the crowd and was rescued by former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga who echoed his sentiments urging leaders to respect each other irrespective of political affiliation.

"We should rally together irrespective of political affiliation or we perish together," Njenga said.
