All public service vehicles will soon be tracked in real-time in a new effort by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to bring order to the sector.

Billed to be a game changer in management of the public transport, it has developed a new digital tracking system that is set to go a long way in ensuring safety on roads.

Agency's Director General George Njau disclosed in an interview that the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSM) is set to be launched in July.

“We intend to launch the system soon after onboarding all PSV vehicles…this is part of our plans of transiting to the digital space in terms of enforcement to guarantee safe roads and safe speed,” Njao said.

Currently, more than 100, 000, he stated, have been on-boarded.

The system, developed with the support of the World Bank captures vehicle and driver authentication, location, route, speed data and vehicle.

It will be manned from NTSA’s central monitoring centre in Nairobi and will also be made available to the management of the PSV saccos.

“The innovation is set to go a long way in curbing the rising cases of road carnage because we shall be able to monitor the vehicle and the speed at which it is driven,” he said.

Vehicles are set to be fitted with smart speed governors.

Other key features of the system include a rapid response where if a driver violates traffic rules, an alert is sent to the nearest police traffic base for action.

Njao at the same time revealed that the issuance of new generation number plates has hit the 100, 000 mark since the process started.

The new plates were launched in September last year with motor vehicles charged Sh3,000 to renew them.
