A female officer is nursing injuries in the hospital after a driver knocked her down at a traffic checkpoint in Nyamira.

The incident occurred mid-Saturday in the Metamaywa area in Borabu.

The driver has since been arrested and booked at Keroka police station.

He will be arraigned on Monday.

Masaba North subcounty police boss Robert Ndambiri said the injured officer was part of other police officers deployed to the National Transport Safety Authority-led crackdown.

She was later rushed to a hospital in Bomet where doctors are attending to her.

"She suffered injuries to the head, back and legs," Ndambiri told the Star by phone.

He said the driver was driving a Toyota Wish car with two other occupants and was heading to Nairobi from Kisii.

A bodaboda rider claimed the driver appeared to have been irked by the withholding of his driving license by the officer.

"She had requested to see it, instead she walked with it to the exterior rear of the car and that is the time the suspect quickly reversed and knocked her down," a witness said.

The driver's attempt to flee was thwarted by a mob who had initially thought he was a thief.
